After the suppression of the Rákóczi war of independence there was neither soldier nor political force that could have prevented the implementation of the 1702 royal decree. In 1715 the two northern towers of Palota castle were demolished, ceasing the fortress character of the building.
According to agreements signed in 1698 and again in 1711 between the Zichy counts and inhabitants of the settlement, the population of Palota became freely moving market-town inhabitants. Only the right of jurisdiction remained with the landlord.
Inhabitants of the settlement also formed an increasingly significant force economically.
