Várpalota has had contacts with the town of Wolfsberg in the Austrian province of Carinthia since 1988. The twinning contract was signed in Wolfsberg in June 1999 and in Várpalota on 20th August 1999. Delegations from the two towns participate at each other's cultural, sports and economic events and numerous sourist trips have been organised by different communities.
Wolfsberg is the regional seat of the Lavant valley. Not only is it the largest and most densely inhabited town, but it is also the economic, social and public administrative centre.

Written history of the town starts with 1178 when the castle was first mentioned. It received town rights in 1331.
There were fires in the town several times in the 17th and 18th Century. The architectural style adopted after these is still decisive in Wolfsberg's architectural culture. The year 1879 was an enormous step forward. With the expansion of the railway the whole length of the valley became accessible.
There are numerous sights and places of interest to see in its vicinity: the Wolfsberg castle built in Tudor style, the fort and numerous churches. The building of the Wolfsberg Town Hall is in a biedermeier style. The oldest building in the town is the Bayerhofen castle.
