General review
General economy

The economic development of Várpalota town and its subregion (Pétfürdő, Ősi, Öskü, Berhida, Tés), was mainly characterised by the heavy industry during the past 50 years. Changes in the 90s, collapse of the heavy industry, loss of markets by state companies, then privatisation, transformation of the economic structure all had very severe effect on the employment situation of the region. Unemployment was very significant in 1992-1995. It only first decreased to under 10% in 1997.
In the region the number of empty workplaces is small, unfortunately since the change in regime there have not been new investments that would have employed significant numbers over a longer term.
The decrease in the number of unemployed is related to investments in Veszprém and Székesfehérvár and the increase in the number of local small and medium sized enterprises.
In the last few years the most significant development in the region was the so-called Japanese programme as a result of which the whole infrastructure was developed. As a result of the preparation of industrial territories in progress, and a more conscious regional marketing some enterprises have settled in the area.
Preparation work for the reception of investors and settlers is under way in two industrial parks established in Várpalota.
On a large company scale the economy of the region is still characterised by aluminium and other metal processing as well as chemical industry.
An area of the economy to develop is tourist infrastructure (places for accommodation, travel agency), a few specialized shops and repair services.
At present there are 437 economic companies and 753 private enterprises.
