First mentioned in a gift certificate in 1289. In earlier times Frantschach/St.Gertraud had significant steel industry, now it has the only paper-mill in Carinthia and is one of the largest employers in the Lavant valley. Tourism is also becoming an important economic factor in the life of the region.
