Porto Sant'Elpidio
History
Independent since 1952, but numerous artefacts prove that there was an inhabited settlement here in the 9th Century B.C.
In 886 the Saint Cross Benedictine cloister was a present from Charlemagne that brought prosperity to the settlement.
The conflict between Fermo and Sant' Elpidio on the authority over the port was resolved by Pope Clemens who gave authority over the port to Sant' Elpidio.
Trandformation into a town began in the 16th Century.
Today Porto Sant'Elpidio is a bathing resort favoured by tourists.
