The area was already inhabited in the iron age.
The settlement developed from a roman colony and was already a town in 90 B.C. They are proud of relics like the famous cistern and findings of the Archeological Museum. The first traces of Christianity were preserved by remnants of the old basilica found underneath the cathedral.
