In its most flourishing period the town was encircled by a wall more than 3 km long. Entry was through one of the seven antique gates. The Canale gate is from the 14th Century.
A relief of the patron saint of the town can be seen in a corner of the wall.
The Roman gate is the main gate leading to the historic part of town.
